Pienghje u murianincu u so figliolu persu

Qqualsiasi lu locu, u fiume, u paese
Ch’è vo travirsarete in sonniu dopu vita
E brame di u meiu à e vostre sò appese
Da fà compia sta notte chì dura senza lita.

5 Between us

This language of my people has -through your doing-
Bewitched the evenings of my sweet childhood
This language -through your doing- seemed to me
Like a sunrise in may, like a bunch of hawthorn

Between us, there was the sea and the wind that stirred it up
Between us, the rubble of unspeakable conflicts
But there was also the neverending poem
Those words like a flaming torche, with a splendid brilliance

Today the world mourns for a lost son
In unison an entire island weeps
Over the one who reached the land of Dante
To guard those who grieve

And wherever you go, whatever verges and banks
You may cross in hereafter dreams
Your footsteps and ours will amble together
To where this night ends
